When I first came to know about the concept of classifieds, I also heard about Craigslist. For long, I took it as synonymous to classifieds. Then, in a small town where I lived and looking to sublet my apartment to move to another city, my search brought up Kijiji. This is where I found lots of ads, the genuine ones. Since then, I have been keeping an eye on both whenever I need to buy or sell any stuff.

 

Craigslist was founded in March, 1995 by Craig Newmark as an email list in San Francisco and Bay Area. It is a free local community based classifieds website that is most popular in San Francisco and other US cities. You can find tons of categories to choose from. They also have a popular forum where you can find varied discussions on different subjects. According to the latest reports, as of January 2008, they reported 26.7 million unique visitors in the US. Worldwide, they have some 27.8 million unique visitors.

Kijiji (pronounced as kee-gee-gee) was founded in March 2005. It was launched in US in 2007.Kijiji, is also a free local community based classifieds website that is more popular outside of US. Although, it is catching up fast in the States also. As of January 2008, they had 2.3 million US visitors and 21.6 million worldwide. Seems like they are closing the gap fast with Craigslist.

Craigslist or Kijiji – Which One is Perfect?

What Craigslist lacks - Kijiji is available in different languages in other countries. It makes it popular internationally. Whereas Craigslist is English only website. Other advantage of Kijiji is the colorful theme of the website. Craigslist has not changed much in the last 10 or more years. They have not been making any major changes or maybe they are but not noticeable.

What Kijiji lacks – Kijiji technical support is very hard to reach. If you have been having any problems, you have to post your issues in the discussion forums. There too you cannot find the accurate answers. Blocking criteria that Kijiji uses makes it hard for genuine users to post their ads. If the genuine posters are blocked or their ads removed, there is possibly no way to find out what happened and how they can fix their ads. They just keep you guessing as to what may have happened. Very painful experience.

Who wins, finally - you ask?

It’s the consumers, you and me. The more competition between these online giants, the better services we get.

Who do you think is better - Craigslist or Kijiji?

Of course, just like there are plenty of fish, there are plenty of local classifieds websites. Just search for “local <your city> classifieds”.

People were making good amount of money from this program. I keep reading that people were paid 50% commission of this pay per click program. Well, I was introduced to the concept of Adsense by Joel Comm.

I must say he makes it very easy to understand any program he is talking about. His ebooks and tutorials are specifically designed for newbies.  That was the first time I ever set up my very first Blogger and Adsense account.

Let’s get into the details on how to set up the Adsense account.

I created my first blog using blogger and applied for Adsense. It did not take long to get accepted. I hear it’s getting little difficult to get accepted into Adsense Program these days. Make sure to read Google Terms and Conditions for using Google Adsense Program.

Create quality contents on that blog so that your visitors find them interesting enough to come back and read more.  Also make sure all your links are working and not broken. It will not leave good impression on your visitors or google.

  • Goto www.google.com/adsense and fill out the application form. You will be sent a confirmation email from google. So, make sure to give your correct email address.  They will review your site, and send you confirmation email if you are accepted or rejected.
  • Once you are accepted, you can login to your Google Adsense account. You will see various tabs on the top, click on “Adsense SetUp”. You can select any of the available links.
  • If you choose “Adsense for Contents”, next page you will see to set up the ad suitable for your page. You can select Leaderboard, Skyscraper, half banner or full banner. You can preview your ads on the same page by clicking on the link provided. If you are not on the google account, you can also preview your ads by using this Free Adsense Preview Tool.
  • Google Placement of ads on your website plays the most important part in monetizing your website. So, make sure they are at the spots where they are most visible to your visitors. Ads on the top of the webpage perform very well. If you place the ads on the bottom, it may not attract many visitors to click on your ads. Ads on the left hand side have been said to perform very well too.
